A hard fought victory for Hellas Verona on Tuesday evening at Parma's Stadio Tardini
The performance last night against Parma at the Tardini epitomised everything we have come to expect from Hellas Verona since Ivan Juric took over in June - compact, hardworking, resolute and direct.
For a variety of reasons, it was a performance and result with to be proud of:
Although it was a superb team effort, there were once again some outstanding individual performances:
Juric said this week that Amrabat would play to the death. On the evidence of last night’s performance, he might just be right!
If a question mark remains for Hellas, it is up front.
While Stepinski’s work ethic and overall contribution are admirable, the Polish striker has not found the net since signing from city rivals Chievo in the summer. On the wing, Eddie Salcedo, the exciting young Inter loanee, was given a rare opportunity to start, but his contribution was obviously not to Juric’s liking, as he was withdrawn at half time.
Salcedo was involved in the build-up to Verona’s goal, which came after just 10 minutes. After some determined play on the touchline, the ball broke to Darko Lazovic on the edge of the Parma penalty area. The Serbian winger hit the ball sweetly, leaving Sepe with no chance as it crashed into the top left-hand corner of the net.
Although Parma had one or two chances to equalise, captain Gervinho was their main attacking threat, the Hellas defence held firm.
For Hellas, Kumbulla came closest when his powerful header from a corner whipped in by Veloso was parried at point blank range by Sepe.
The gripping encounter ended on a rather sour note, when Parma played on despite an injury to Veloso. When Verona were finally able to put the ball out of play to allow treatment to the injured midfielder, Parma subsequently refused to return the ball to a Verona player, as is the sporting custom in such circumstances.
Notwithstanding the tense conclusion, a vital and hard-earned three points for Hellas Verona, who now turn their attention to Sunday’s Derby del Garda.
